Van Duong Thanh Fine Arts Museum was officially recognized and established by the Ministry of Culture and interdisciplinary ministries 2023, or 20 years of preparing the collection. The villa has French architecture by Belgian designer and artist Van Duong Thanh – completed the year 2007. Here visitors will come into contact with painting, history, culture, Vietnamese art in miniature.

Biography

Bui Xuan Phai (1/9/1920–24/6/1988) is a Vietnamese artist, famous for his paintings about Hanoi's Old Quarter.

He graduated from the Department of Painting at the Indochina College of Fine Arts, course 1941–1945.

Bui Xuan Phai joined the resistance, Participate in many exhibitions. Year 1952 he returned to Hanoi, living at house no 87 Thuoc Bac Street until his death.

Year 1956-1957 He teaches at Hanoi School of Fine Arts. That year Bui Xuan Phai joined the Giai Pham Humanities movement, had to study labor in a carpentry workshop in Nam Dinh and the school board of directors asked him to write an application to stop teaching at the Fine Arts School..

Painting career

Bui Xuan Phai is one of the artists of the last generation of students at Indochina College of Fine Arts, at the same time as famous painter Nguyen Sang, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Duong Bich Lien – names that greatly influenced the development of modern Vietnamese fine arts. He specializes in oil painting materials, Passionate about the topic of Hanoi's Old Quarter. Right from the moment of birth, His creations were admired by the masses, calling this line of paintings Pho Phai.

Bui Xuan Phai's street paintings are both ancient and very realistic, clearly shown soul core of Hanoi's Old Quarter over the decades 50, 60, 70. There are often patches of color in Phai's paintings bold border, The city not only becomes itself but also gets closer to people, From surface to landscape, there is depth within. Outside the old town, He also painted other topics, like: paddle, portrait, countryside, nude, still life… very successful. Many of Bui Xuan Phai's paintings have won awards in national and capital exhibitions. He paints on canvas, paper, wooden board, even on newspaper when there are not enough ingredients. He used many different painting mediums such as oil paint, watercolor, pastel, than, pencil… His works deeply express the soul of the Vietnamese people, humane personality and love of freedom, sense of humor, full of sadness and misery.
